CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Mark-Anthony Turnage’s
Twice Through the Heart tells the painful story of an abused woman imprisoned for the murder of her husband. This dramatic scena for mezzo-soprano and ensemble is based on Jackie Kay’s poem-sequence of the same name. The program opens with Sir Richard Rodney Bennett’s
Jazz Calendar, which is based on the nursery rhyme “Monday’s Child is Fair of Face.” Born in Britain but a long-time New Yorker, Bennett is equally at ease with all 20th-century musical styles, from jazz to the avant-garde; his works include the film scores for
Far from the Maddening Crowd,
Nicholas and Alexandra and
Four Weddings and a Funeral.
