The goals guiding the MusiCorps® program are as follows:
| 1. |
To create a training vehicle for Civic musicians to acquire the skills necessary for successful community engagement, advocacy, and leadership, concomitant with the Orchestra’s central educational mission of training the outstanding orchestra players of tomorrow. |
| 2. |
To expand teaching and performance opportunities in the community for members of the Civic Orchestra. |
| 3. |
To demonstrate a commitment by the Civic and the CSO as a whole to develop partnerships with diverse institutions and their constituencies in the community, and to build these relationships through flexible partnerships. |
| 4. |
To create a range of partnership activities that seek to train, mentor, and generally enrich the lives of individuals served both directly and peripherally by the participating sites. |
| 5. |
To initiate collaborative performances with diverse ensembles in communities hosting MusiCorps® visits. |
| 6. |
To meet important audience development and diversification goals of the Civic, on a grassroots level in communities, as a prerequisite to attracting new audiences to Symphony Center for Civic Orchestra concerts, as well as ultimately developing the long term prospect of attracting these same audiences to a broad range of Symphony Center events, including the CSO. |
With funding from the Polk Bros. Foundation and as part of a continued collaboration with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Musician Activity Partnership (MAP) program, Civic Orchestra musicians accepted into the MusiCorps® program will also visit elementary schools and present a program called Musical Adventures with the Instrument Families. These schools are located in various neighborhoods in the city of Chicago. Each school will receive an interactive visit from a string quintet, woodwind quintet, brass quintet and percussion quartet, exposing them to each of the instrument families.
MusiCorps® members are involved in a broad range of activities that include teaching, coaching sessions (sectionals, instrumental workshops, auditioning skills, practice methods), lecture-performances (for general public & music appreciation classes), and chamber ensemble performances.
