The House that Burnham Built

The House that Burnham Built

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Riccardo Muti Make No Little Plans
Saturday, October 17, 2009

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s founder and first music director Theodore Thomas tapped architect Daniel Burnham to build a permanent home for his orchestra. Orchestra Hall was completed in 1904, and not even the visionary team of Thomas and Burnham could have anticipated the magnitude of CSO’s musical legacy that has thrilled audiences for more than a century. In honor of the centennial of Burnham’s great Plan of Chicago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra hosts a musical celebration at Symphony Center on Saturday, October 17, 2009.

On that day, patrons can enjoy tours of Symphony Center led by docents from the Chicago Architecture Foundation, small ensemble performances, a Chicago Symphony Orchestra “All-Access” chamber music concert, and a Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert led by Music Director Designate Riccardo Muti that will showcase the magnificent sound of our great Orchestra in Burnham’s glorious concert hall. The day ends with a post-concert, town hall-style meeting with Maestro Muti and Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association President Deborah Rutter, who will take questions from the audience and discuss some of the CSO’s plans for the next great chapter in its history.
