![]() That’s how soprano Jessica Rivera described Poulenc’s Gloria, one of her favorite works, and one that has not been heard in Symphony Center for more than 20 years. Ms. Rivera will make her CSO debut in the Gloria, which she describes as “a gorgeous work” that “should be performed often and with great exuberance and joy. I am honored to revive it with the CSO after so many years.” From the majesty of the orchestra’s opening bars and the first announcement by the chorus to the final amen of the soprano solo, it is a journey of faith. It is exuberant with adoration, yet reverently reflective. The listener can expect to hear bold orchestral and choral proclamations along with delicate devotion in the soprano melodies. The soprano solo is extremely exposed and so delicate. It must be effortless, but profoundly sincere. I guess that is where the joy comes in for me. When I sing it from my heart, I often forget the technical tightrope I’m walking. I performed my first Gloria in my home town, Los Angeles, during the inaugural season of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in December 2003. It was a very special experience for me, first, because I was performing in my home town and so many of my family, friends, and fans who have supported me throughout the years were in attendance, and second, performing the Gloria during the Advent season was an occasion of particular significance to me. I am thrilled to be making my debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Haitink in Poulenc’s Gloria. It will be a wonderful way to begin my almost four month musical ‘residence’ in Chicago. Jessica Rivera will perform with the CSO in November, and then go cross-town to appear in Lyric Opera’s production of Doctor Atomic in December and January. She returns to perform with the CSO in Golijov’s Ainadamar in February. CSO Thursday series concerts are sponsored by |
