Hubbard Street Dance Chicago

Who knew that a brief hallway conversation between CSO artistic head Martha Gilmer and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s artistic director, Jim Vincent, would launch one of the most exciting and fruitful arts collaborations in Chicago? Come to Symphony Center to celebrate this exceptional five-year partnership.

Audiences around the world have applauded Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s brilliant and innovative style of contemporary dance and its fearless dancers. In a fitting anniversary reflection, the program opens with counter/part, a fast-paced piece performed to music by J. S. Bach, and the very first work performed together by the CSO and HSDC five seasons ago. You’ll also be captivated when HSDC shows off its trademark wit and verve in SF/LB, a vibrant and exhilarating work set to Bernstein’s jazzy Prelude, Fugue and Riffs.

AN EXCLUSIVE!

As a special bonus, the program features a new piece by choreographer Doug Varone, with music by John Adams. Varone, according to The New York Times, has created “some of modern dance’s most engrossing works.” Jim Vincent says Varone is a “powerful voice,” and a choreographer whose work “I’ve been pursuing for a while.”

For the dancers, performing to live music makes the level of concentration grow. Their ears grow. It can become very routine performing with taped music.

What was beautiful for me was to see this new relationship grow. It has deepened the creative process, and it can only go to great places. At the end of the day, this is an enriching experience for all. We enjoy each and every performance. This partnership has opened something much larger than a door. It’s been a gift.
