![]() Ainadamar (EYE-nuh-duh-mar) means
"fountain of tears" in Arabic. It is the name
of an ancient well near Granada that, centuries
ago, inspired poets to write verses about its
beauty, splendor, and sense of peace. In modern
times, it is where Spanish poet and playwright
Federico García Lorca was murdered by
Fascist Falangists.
Ainadamar is, says composer Osvaldo Golijov,
a "real fountain that is the witness of harmony
and the witness of barbarity."
The opera opens in 1969, decades after Lorca's
death. His muse and collaborator Margarita
Xirgu is poised to perform in Lorca's play
Mariana Pineda. Close to death herself, and
haunted by thoughts of Lorca's troubled life,
Xirgu realizes she cannot make her entrance,
and must pass on her work, her passions and
her hopes to her students.
While Ainadamar hinges on the charismatic
Lorca, his life, and his tragic death, the opera
also shows how this man became a guiding
symbol and myth. It is a story about the
passing of a legacy, freedom, courage, and
the continuation of an artist's work into
the next generation.
From the very start, with a prelude that
introduces the sounds of trickling water, distant
trumpets, and the wild galloping of horses,
Ainadamar is a lush blend of elements and
rhythms; Spanish and Latin American culture
and music; and flamenco, rumba, and tango.
